What are Kari’s Law & Ray Baum’s Act?
In 2014, the American Hotel & Lodging Association created an internal task force to help enact Kari’s Law after a Texas woman was attacked and killed because she was unable to get an outside line from her hotel room to dial 911.
Kari’s Law went into effect February 16, 2020 and ensures anyone dialing from a multi-line telephone system (MLTS)*** can call 911 without entering a prefix (ex: 9+911).
The following year, Ray Baum’s Act went into effect on January 6, 2021 and requires your system to transmit the precise location-information (room number, extension, etc.) of the 911 call placed.
***Examples of businesses that utilize MLTS: hotels/hospitality, hospitals & medical clinics, executive suite offices, any phone that has it’s own extension.***
